Support for Office for Mac 2011 was originally scheduled to end on January 12, 2016, but because Office for Mac 2016 did not come out until July 2015, Microsoft extended support until October 10, 2017. Office for Mac 2011 also has a shorter lifecycle than Office 2010.

Outlook also does not allow the user to disable Cached Exchange Mode, unlike the Windows version, and it is therefore not possible to connect to an Exchange Server without downloading a local cache of mail and calendar data.
Microsoft does not support CalDAV and CardDAV in Outlook, so there is no way to sync directly Outlook through iCloud. It also has several human language limitations, such as lack of support for right-to-left languages such as Arabic, Persian, and Hebrew and automatic language detection. It also cannot handle attachments in Rich Text Format e-mail messages sent from Outlook for Windows, which are delivered as winmail.dat attachments. It does not support ActiveX controls, or OpenDocument Format. Office for Mac 2011 has a number of limitations compared to Office 2010 for Windows. There are however, apparently, according to Microsoft Helpdesk, some third party applications that can address problems with the VBA interface with Office for Mac. Purchasing the Home Premium version of Office for Mac will not allow telephone support automatically to query any problems with the VBA interface. Support for Visual Basic for Applications macros has returned after having been dropped in Office 2008.
Its interface is now more similar to Office 20 for Windows, with the addition of the ribbon.

Each of these is significant, but the most significant change in the long run may be the addition of the Microsoft Document Connection - a window to SharePoint and Windows Live SkyDrive shares - to the Mac OS X Dock.Microsoft Office 2011 includes more robust enterprise support and greater feature parity with the Windows edition. The changes getting the most attention are the addition of the ribbon interface, which brings the Office for Mac GUI in line with the interface that Windows users have been working with since Office 2007, and the replacement of Entourage with Outlook. Still, some business-grade features in Office 2010 - such as Business Contact Manager and PowerPivot for Excel - have yet to make it to the Mac. Word 2011 has improved document layout tools, while Excel 2011 has been brought up to date with pivot tables, conditional formatting, sparklines, and support for Visual Basic macros. The new Mac suite - comprising Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook 2011 - does inherit a number of Office 2010's top features, including simultaneous document editing or co-authoring, built-in graphics tools, PowerPoint slideshow broadcasting, Outlook's conversation view, and interoperability with Office Web Apps. Despite this, Office 2011 goes a long way toward integrating the Mac and Windows Office worlds into a seamless whole. There's no database application, no dedicated page-layout application (though Word 2011 is quite good at page layout for shorter documents), and no OneNote - the most serious shortcoming, in my opinion. Office for Mac 2011 ($279.95 direct from Microsoft) is still not nearly as full-featured as Office 2010 for Windows.
The Mac suite remains well behind its latest Windows counterpart, Office 2010, but it's now on a par with Office 2007, and that by itself is a significant step forward from Office for Mac 2008. Microsoft's newly released Office for Mac 2011 takes huge steps toward bringing the same experience to Office users on both Windows and Mac - but they're the steps that begin a journey, not bring it to an end.
